In terms of configuration management systems for UNIX systems, cfengine is one of the best known, having been around for 15 years. It appears to have a good reputation. Sadly the documentation is pretty dire...
The menu structure of the cfengine.org website seems unstructured, with headings that don't seem to make any sense (REGISTER; PREVIEW; CONDITIONS; FD.4.THT), and links that vary between cfengine.org and cfengine.com. As you move between pages, they have differing layouts too. Perhaps the website hasn't changed in the last 15 years? The worst part of the experience though, is that the documentation is quite confusing. The quickstart is very brief indeed, and links to another guide for a configuration file. The quickstart tutorial is a PDF file, and appears to be the slides for a presentation. The example installation basically shows the console output of an example installation, but doesn't give too much other information. Then you click on the Getting Started link, and get taken a whole load more unstructured information. Luckily there is a cfengine wiki. Unluckily there isn't a simple getting started tutorial there either. Maybe at some point in the future there will be a total beginner's guide to cfengine on FreeBSD on this site...
